MINI BIO:

Big, craggy, black-haired, open-mouthed American star, the forerunner of a new, muscular kind of leading man, who would take over from the lounge lizards of the thirties and be dubbed "beefcake" by the Press. His Greek-type good looks were mostly seen in open-air action yarns, and he drifted away from films after passing 45. He was often capable of surprisingly subtle and sensitive performances, and generally had more acting talent than his harsher critics allowed. Five times married. Died from cancer.

Was color-blind.

In her autobiography, Esther Williams details a passionate affair she had with Mature during the filming of Million Dollar Mermaid (1952). According to Williams, her marriage was on the rocks, she needed love and Mature provided all she wanted.
