Plum-nosed, rasp-voiced, distinctive and likeable American actor whose receding dark hair was sometimes in latter years covered by a toupee. Used in supporting roles by Fox in their realist thrillers of the late 1940s, but in a variety of leading roles after an Academy Award (best supporting actor) for A Streetcar Named Desire. From 1972 to 1977 he became entrenched in a very popular TV crime series The Streets of San Francisco. Additional Oscar nomination for On the Waterfront.
