Florid, mustachioed, ever-cheerful, athletic American actor, one of the biggest stars of the Hollywood silent era, and its swashbuckler par excellence, doing all his own spectacular stunts against equally spectacular sets. When sound came, his time was over. Married to Mary Pickford (second of three) from 1920 to 1936. Father of Douglas Fairbanks Jr. (by first wife). Died from a heart attack. He was honored with one star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Motion Pictures. Douglas Fairbanks's handprints and footprints were 'set in stone' at Grauman's Chinese Theater during imprint ceremony #1 on Apr 30, 1927. In addition, Fairbanks was immortalized on a US postal stamp in 1984. Fairbanks was never nominated for an Academy Award. However he won one Honorary Award in 1939 (Commemorative Award) - recognizing the unique and outstanding contribution of Douglas Fairbanks, first President of the Academy, to the international development of the motion picture.
