Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, founded in 1927 by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Sid Grauman and Louis B. Mayer, is the site of the first-ever Academy Awards (1929). It is rumored to be haunted by the ghost of Marilyn Monroe who lived in Suite 1200 and the ghost of Montgomery Clift.
The Roosevelt was founded in 1927 by Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Sid Grauman, and Louis B. Mayer to house film-makers from the east coast -- so the list of its guests is impressive: Judy Garland, Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, Douglas Fairbanks, Gloria Swanson, Harold Lloyd, Clara Bow, David Niven, Errol Flynn, Frank Sinatra, Laurel and Hardy, among others. The Roosevelt was also the home of the first-ever Academy Awards (in 1929 in the Blossom ballroom) and the residence of Marilyn Monroe when her modeling career took off (her first magazine shoot was taken on the diving board on the pool behind the hotel, no longer there). And, lastly, for those who are willing to believe, the Roosevelt is also the home of some notable apparitions including the ghosts of Marilyn Monroe and Montgomery Clift.
