The historic Colonial Theater was built in 1903. In 1917, the Great Houdini performed there before an audience of 300, freeing himself from a burglar-proof safe.
In 1957 scenes from The Blob starring Steve McQueen were filmed at the Colonial and other spots in and around Phoenixville.

In its early days, the Colonial Theater was home to live stage shows, vaudeville acts and musicals including appearances by Mary Pickford and Harry Houdini (who performed there before an audience of 300, freeing himself from a burglar-proof safe). And of course, Classic Movie buffs know that the Colonial was featured in the 1958 science fiction classic, The Blob, starring Steve McQueen filmed (the movie was filmed in and around Phoenixville, Downingtown, Chester Springs and Royersford).
