North by Northwest Overview:

North by Northwest (1959) was a Adventure - Mystery Film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and produced by Alfred Hitchcock and Herbert Coleman.

SYNOPSIS

This is one of Hitchcock's greatest, with suspense, action, and comedy in one non-stop motion picture. In one of his patented ordinary-man-in-exceptional-circumstances plots, advertising executive Grant gets kidnapped from a business engagement and winds up in a baffling, twisting battle with enemy agents and on the run from both police and the agents. This technically superb film yielded some of Hitchcock's best-known images: the crop duster bearing down on Grant in a remote cornfield, Grant and Saint dangling from Mt. Rushmore, Saint's frank seduction of Grant on a train. Essential viewing. The laserdisc includes an audio commentary by Frank Danielle, dean of USC Film School, with special screenplay analysis.

Quotes from North by Northwest

Eve Kendall: How do I know you aren't a murderer?
Roger Thornhill: You don't.
Eve Kendall: Maybe you're planning to murder me right here, tonight.
Roger Thornhill: Shall I?
Eve Kendall: Please do.

Roger Thornhill: If you fellows can't lick the VanDamm's of this world without asking girls like her to bed down with them and fly away with them and probably never come back, perhaps you ought to start learning how to lose a few cold wars.
The Professor: I'm afraid we're already doing that.

Phillip Vandamm: Seems to me you fellows could stand a little less training from the F.B.I. and a little more from the Actor's Studio.

Facts about North by Northwest

Cary Grant was initially reluctant to accept the role of Roger Thornhill since at 55 he was much older than the character.
Alfred Hitchcock couldn't get permission to film inside the UN, so footage was made of the interior of the building using a hidden camera, and the rooms were later recreated on a soundstage.
According to the book "Haunted Idol: The Story of the Real Cary Grant" by Geoffrey Wansell, Cary Grant wanted Sophia Loren to play the part of Eve Kendall but she turned the role down. Seven years later Sophia Loren played a role very similar to Eve Kendall in Stanley Donen's Alfred Hitchcock-inspired thriller Arabesque opposite Gregory Peck - MGM's original choice for the role of Roger Thornhill.
