Lt. j.g. Kenneth M. Braden: How come they call you Weary?
Weary: That's my name.
Lt. j.g. Kenneth M. Braden: Nickname?
Weary: No, sir, my real name. I'm the youngest of 13 children. I guess when I was born, my mother couldn't think of another name.

Commander Paul Stevenson: Oh, uh, one more thing, Mr. Braden, you don't get captured.
Lt. j.g. Kenneth M. Braden: Mm-hmm. I wouldn't think of it, sir.

Facts about Up Periscope

All underwater miniature submarine shots were reused from the film Destination Tokyo.
Up Periscope was released in '59 (1959). Many years later a parody of the submarine movie genre would be made both in a year with a reverse of this film's year of release (i.e. in '95 (1995)) and with also a title that reverses this movie's title (i.e. Down Periscope).
In a separately filmed trailer, James Garner talks to the audience about the film, and urges them to come see him on "the big screen".
