SYNOPSIS
Hawks and author William Faulkner constructed this WWI drama from a celebrated French WWI film, Wooden Crosses. French commander Baxter struggles with the horrors of war and the loss of his fellow soldiers, coping with the help of a steady ration of liquor. His situation worsens when Barrymore, his father and the oldest enlisted man in the army, enters his regiment, and when junior officer March becomes a rival for the attention of nurse Lang.
