The original Broadway production of "Anna Christie" by Eugene O'Neill opened on November 2, 1921 at the Vanderbilt Theatre, ran for 177 performances and won the Pulitzer Prize in Drama in 1922.

The second scene of the English language version, an exterior shot with George Marion and Marie Dressler drunkenly traveling from the coal barge to the bar, is used in the German language version as the first scene.
