Warren Oates character, Seaman Kovacs, is constantly eating. You can tell how many takes each scene required by the size of the bites he takes. In some he wolfs the food, in others he just picks at it.
Up Periscope was released in '59 (1959). Many years later a parody of the submarine movie genre would be made both in a year with a reverse of this film's year of release (i.e. in '95 (1995)) and with also a title that reverses this movie's title (i.e. Down Periscope).
