Thora Hird was a dynamic British character actress with a career that spanned eight decades. Although from the coast of Lancashire, she proved adept at a variety of terrace-row accents, and played maids, landladies, cleaners, shop-women and forth-right parents. She was also popular on a number of TV series including the British sitcoms "Meet the Wife" and "Last of the Summer Wine". She is the mother of former child star Janette Scott.

For several years she was presenter of the BBC1 religious programme "Your Songs Of Praise Choice" (later retitled "Praise Be!") from the mid 1970s.

She made guest appearances during the 1990s in such BBC programmes as "Thats Showbusiness" and "One Foot In The Past".

Received OBE in 1983 and DBE (making her Dame Thora Hird) in 1993.
