Madeleine Carroll Overview:

Legendary actress, Madeleine Carroll, was born Edith Madeleine Carroll on Feb 26, 1906 in West Bromwich, West Midlands. Carroll died at the age of 81 on Oct 2, 1987 in Marbella, Spain and was laid to rest in Cementeri de Calonge Cemetery in Cataluna, Spain.

MINI BIO:

Exquisite English blonde actress with glazed china face. Her enormous popularity in British films inevitably led to an exit for Hollywood, but her films there included too few worthy of her beauty and talents. Best remembered as the handcuffed lady in The 39 Steps (Hitchcock version), her four marriages included one to actor Sterling Hayden, from 1942 to 1946.

She was honored with one star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in the category of Motion Pictures. Carroll was never nominated for an Academy Award.

1938: Her salary was reported to be over $250,000, making her the highest-paid actress in Hollywood.

She appeared on the NBC Radio program "Chase and Sanborn Hour" October 30, 1938, with Nelson Eddy and Dorothy Lamour (vocalists), Robert Armbruster and his orchestra, starring Edgar Bergen (Charlie McCarthy), Don Ameche (host), Judy Zeke and Anne Canova. She performed with Eddy, Ameche and Bergen.

She was the first of Alfred Hitchcock's "ice-cool blondes", and was the highest-paid Hollywood actress of her time.
