Rugged, outspoken, curly-haired American star and later leading character player, of Irish ancestry. He never won an Oscar, despite gruff, consistently good, characteristically intense performances over 38 years; he was nominated three times - for The Song of Bernadette, The Farmer's Daughter and Johnny Belinda. Died from emphysema.
