In a career that spanned 35 years, Herbert Anderson appeared in over 110 film and TV roles. He made his feature film debut (uncredited) in The Fighting 69th (1940) starring James Cagney, Pat O'Brien and George Brent. His later films included The Male Animal (as Michael Barnes) and Dive Bomber (as Chubby). He is probably best remembered for his role as Henry Mitchell in the TV sitcom Dennis The Menace (1959-1963).

Appeared in an episode of "The Brady Bunch" (1969) as a doctor. In that episode, in one scene, four TV parents were shown together: Robert Reed and Florence Henderson (Mike and Carol Brady - "The Brady Bunch" (1969)), Marion Ross (Marion Cunningham - "Happy Days" (1974)) and Herbert Anderson (Henry Mitchell - "Dennis the Menace" (1959)). Ross also played a doctor in that episode.
