American actor who played gullible sorts or inept woman chasers, with the occasional wisecracking friend on the side. Not really discovered by Hollywood until into his forties, when his mournful features found their way into several classic comedies. But the qualities of the roles offered fell away, and he returned to his first love, the stage.

He claimed never to have seen any of his films, including The Seven Year Itch, and had only ever seen glimpses of himself on the screen when his wife was watching television. He said he suffered from an acute inferiority complex and could not bear to see himself on screen as he was too critical of himself.

Won Broadway's 1953 Tony Award as Best Actor (Dramatic) for "The Seven Year Itch," a performance that he recreated in the film of the same name, The Seven Year Itch (1955).

Was inducted in the Owensboro High School Hall of Fame in 2003.
