Solemn-looking, round-faced, beady-eyed British character star with a slick of dark hair that would gradually vanish as he passed through middle age. His careful, well-modulated speech could lend character to men from all walks of life, and he could just as easily be pompous as down-to-earth. At his peak from 1937 to 1952, during which time he produced some memorable film performances - for one, in The Heiress, he was nominated for an Oscar. First wife died: married actress Meriel Forbes (1913-2000) in 1944. Knighted in 1947. Died from a virus infection. Additional Oscar nomination for Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan Lord of the Apes. Ralph Richardson Quotes:
Joseph Finsbury:
[riding with the Hackett funeral party] It is, as you know, a statistical fact that in London one person dies every twenty-five seconds - which means that it is extremely probable that one of us may not even live to arrive at the ceremony!
Baron von Richter: David, we are not asking for anything. Europe is ours, we can walk into Britain whenever we like.
Sir David Kelly: If you think we're going to gamble on Herr Hitler's guarantees, you're making a grave mistake. All those years in England seems to have left you none the wiser. We're not easily frightened. Also we know how hard it is for an army to cross the Channel. The last little Corporal who tried came a cropper. So don't threaten or dictate to us until you're marching up Whitehall... and even then we won't listen.
Baines: There's lies and lies.
Mrs. Baines: What do you mean by that?
Baines: Some lies are just kindness.
