Pixie-like, fair-haired, sharp-nosed, bright-eyed, often dominant Canadian actress who played character roles in Hollywood from 1934 after long stage experience in New York dating back to 1900. Often assuming British or foreign accents, the veteran actress was, as befitted her Broadway experience, an expert at taking center stage from less experienced principals. After making her last Hollywood film in 1951, she returned to the stage and made occasional appearances in TV drama up to her death.
