Tony Kirby: That family of yours, boy, they knock me for a loop. I don't know, it... it just seemed like, in their own way, they've found what everybody's looking for. I mean, people spend their whole lives building castles in the air and then nothing ever comes of it. I wonder why that is. Well it takes courage Everybody's afraid to live.
Alice Sycamore: You ought to hear Grandpa on that subject. You know he says most people nowadays are run by fear. Fear of what they eat, fear of what they drink, fear of their jobs, their future, fear of their health. They're scared to save money, and they're scared to spend it. You know what his pet aversion is? The people who commercialize on fear, you know they scare you to death so they can sell you something you don't need.

Dr. Jasquith: I thought you said you came here to have a nervous breakdown.
Charlotte: About that, I've decided not to have one.

Dr. Peter Blood: Nuttall, me lad, there's just one other little thing. Do you think you could find me a good stout piece of timber? About so thick and so long?
Honesty Nuttall: Yes, I think so.
Dr. Peter Blood: Then do so and lash it to your spine - it needs stiffening. Courage! We'll join you at midnight.

Tony Kirby: Well, he's married, wife just had a baby, didn't think it was fair to gamble with the future. Anyway that's his excuse for lack of courage. I know, say it -- what's my excuse? Well, the Kirbys have been bankers for 9,000 years or something, and that line just can't be broken -- and that's been pounded into my head until I had softening in the brain. That's my excuse.

Scarecrow: I'm not afraid of her! I'll see you get safely to the Wizard now, whether I get a brain or not. Stuff a mattress with me. Ha!
Tin Woodsman: I'll see you reach the Wizard, whether I get a heart or not. Beehive, bah! Let her try and make a beehive out of me!
Dorothy: Oh, you're the best friends anybody ever had. And it's funny, but I feel as if I'd known you all the time, but I couldn't have, could I?
Scarecrow: I don't see how. You weren't around when I was stuffed and sewn together, were you?
Tin Woodsman: And I was standing over there, rusting for the longest time.
Dorothy: Still, I wish I could remember, but I guess it doesn't matter anyway. We know each other now, don't we?
Scarecrow: That's right.
Tin Woodsman: We do.
Scarecrow: To Oz?
Tin Woodsman: To Oz.

Scarecrow: Witch? Hmph, I'm not afraid of a witch. I'm not afraid of anything - except a lighted match.

Cowardly Lion: I'll get you anyway, Pee-wee.
[Chases Toto; Dorothy hits him on the nose]
Dorothy: Shame on you!
Cowardly Lion: [Sobbing] Why did you do that for? I didn't bite him.
Dorothy: No, but you tried to. It's bad enough picking on a straw man, but picking on a little dog.
Cowardly Lion: Well, you didn't have to go and hit me! Is my nose bleeding?
Dorothy: Of course not.

Zeke: Listen, kid. Are you gonna try and let that old Gulch heifer try and buffalo ya'? She ain't nothing to be afraid of. Have a little courage, that's all.
Dorothy: I'm not afraid of her.
Zeke: Well then, next time she squawks, walk right up to her and spit in her eye. That's what I'd do.
