Cheers for Miss Bishop

Cheers for Miss Bishop

John Stevens: [Reading from J. M. Barrie's book, The Little Minister] The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story, and writes another.
Ella Bishop: [Interrupting] Would you mind reading that again? Just the last sentence.
John Stevens: The life of every man is a diary in which he means to write one story... and writes another.
Ella Bishop: I suppose that's true, isn't it? We dream dreams and... Do go on.

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments

Moses: Will you swear in the name of your god that you are not my mother?
Yochabel: We do not even know His name.
Moses: Then look into my eyes and tell me you are not my mother.
Yochabel: [shaking her head] Oh, Moses, Moses. I can not. I can not.
[Yochabel, then heavily wept, on Moses' arms]

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments

Joshua: Let the old woman loose!
Egyptian guard: She'll stay where she is, and you'll die in the lion pit!
Lilia: Joshua!
Yochabel: Run to the prince and beg mercy!
Lilia: Mercy from Rameses?
Yochabel: No. From Prince Moses, there on the pavilion.

The Ten Commandments

The Ten Commandments

Bithiah: Moses, do not enter! There is only sorrow here.
Moses: Are you comforting it, Mother? I followed you here to find this woman Yocha... You were the woman who was caught between the stones.
Yochabel: Until you come.
Bithiah: My son, if you love me, you will...
Moses: I love you, Mother, but am I your son? Or yours?
Yochabel: No, you are not my son. If you believe that men and women are cattle to be driven under the lash, if you can bow before idols of stone and golden images of beasts, you are not my son.

Cheers for Miss Bishop

Cheers for Miss Bishop

Ella Bishop: [giving a toast] So here's to our nation: she's young, she's growing too fast, she makes a lot of mistakes, but somehow she does manage to keep her people free. May she always.

Ella Bishop: [Slowly rising from her seat] President Corcoran, do you mean... Well, of course I know you couldn't mean... But I can't help thinking that you might mean... President Corcoran, do you mean I...
James Corcoran, Midwestern U. President: Oh dear dear dear. There's a heap of repetition in that sentence... for a teacher of freshman English!
Ella Bishop: Oh...
James Corcoran, Midwestern U. President: I take it you're going to accept?
Ella Bishop: Accept? Accept? Well, if I could... If I could only... Well, President Corcoran!
[Kisses him on the forehead then runs away]

Ben-Hur

Ben-Hur

[Christ passes, bearing the cross]
Esther: How can this be?
Judah Ben-Hur: [shocked] I *know* this man!
[Jesus stumbles and is whipped by the centurions]
Miriam: [pleading] Won't someone help him?
[Jesus is whipped again]
Tirzah: Have pity on him!
Miriam: [wonderingly] In his pain... there's a look of peace.
Judah Ben-Hur: Watch over them, Esther.
[he goes after Jesus]
Miriam: We must go back.
Esther: [sadly] I brought you here to this... when I hoped...
Miriam: [looking after Christ] You haven't failed, Esther.

Hi Diddle Diddle

Hi Diddle Diddle

[Looking at hat check girl]
Senator Simpson: You know, I've seen that girl somewhere before.
Liza Prescott: She's a very particular friend of the director who's making this picture. He sticks her in every scene he can.
Janie Prescott: Mother, shh! Somebody might hear you.
