TURNER CLASSIC MOVIES (TCM) AND BALL STATE UNIVERSITY TO OFFER FREE ONLINE FILM NOIR COURSE BEGINNING JUNE 1
Course Will Run Concurrently With TCM's Summer Of Darkness Programming Event In June And July
Free Online Course Hosted By the Canvas Network
Turner Classic Movies (TCM) today
announced a collaboration with Ball State University and Canvas
Network, an open online educational platform from Instructure, to
present Into the Darkness: Investigating Film Noir, a free
online multimedia course open to the general public. The open online
course is one of several interactive initiatives TCM is launching in
connection to its Summer of Darkness programming event for fans
that want to dive deeper into the world of film noir. Enrollment begins
today and noir fans can sign up for the course at tcm.com/summerofdarkness
"We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Ball State on this exciting and innovative approach to learning," said Jennifer Dorian, general manager Turner Classic Movies. "TCM at its core is about context, curation and connections and by working with Ball State on this online course we are able to engage with our passionate film audience in another exciting and new way."
The free, nine-week course will be offered on Canvas Network and will be taught by Richard Edwards, Executive Director of Ball State's iLearn Research and film noir expert. The course, designed in part with TCM's Summer of Darkness Programming event, will bring together an online community of film noir students and fans to learn about the genre and its place in cinematic history. The course will feature:
- Educational lecture videos
- Access to TCM's online archives, including movie descriptions, original photos, movie trailers and original essays on film noir
- OTTO (Open Text Tool for Online video) annotation software developed by Edwards and Christopher Turvey, a Ball State researcher/developer allowing students the experience of having real-time discussions about specific film titles
- Online video chat with Summer of Darkness primetime host, Eddie Muller
"As an educator I am excited to coordinate Ball State's learning opportunities with TCM's programming efforts to present students with a rare opportunity to engage with the material and genre," said Edwards. "With 'Summer of Darkness,' we can bring together a worldwide community of film noir students, to investigate and discuss these great films in depth."
In addition to its work with Ball State, TCM is creating social activations to provide additional engagement opportunities. Both students and fans will share #Noirsummer to discuss the genre and films shown in addition to social media contests the network will run throughout the programming event.
