This month on TCM...
Susan Hayward / Thursdays:
TCM celebrates Susan Hayward as "Star of the Month" on Thursdays this September. Films to be shown include Hayward's "I Want to Live" for which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1959, plus the four films which brought her additional Academy Award nominations: "I'll Cry Tomorrow," "With a Song in My Heart," "My Foolish Heart" and "Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman." You can view these, and over 20 more Hayward films on TCM this month.
Five Came Back / Tuesdays:
This month's TCM Spotlight focuses on 5 acclaimed directors who spearheaded the government's World War II film propaganda program and the ways in which their wartime experiences changed and deepened them. The programming is based on the 2014 book "Five Came Back" by Mark Harris, who serves as co-host for each evening. Of the films being shown, 27 are TCM premieres, and each night will focus on a different director: Frank Capra, William Wyler, John Huston, George Stevens and John Ford.
James Dean's Television Legacy / Friday September 25:
It has long been a frustration for James Dean fans that this brilliant talent and cultural icon had major roles in only three movies: "East of Eden," "Rebel Without a Cause" and "Giant." Now, five days before the 60th anniversary of Dean's tragic death at age 24, TCM presents a selection of dynamic Dean performances for live television that are rarely seen - especially when grouped together in this manner. All the programs are TCM premieres.
W.C. Fields 100 Years in Film / Friday September 4:
TCM celebrates the centenary of the movie career of the great W. C. Fields (1880-1946) who began making film shorts in 1915 in New York. Through the next 30 years and some 40 films, Fields established himself as one of the outstanding comics of the 20th century - a cantankerous fellow with an insinuating voice, renowned as a lover of gin and gambling, and a hater of children and dogs. Fields' granddaughter, Dr. Harriet Fields, joins Ben Mankiewicz in co-hosting an evening of Fields films which includes "It's a Gift," "David Copperfield," "You Cant' Cheat an Honest Man" and "The Bank Dick."
