The Story of Dr. Wassell Overview:
The Story of Dr. Wassell (1944) was a Drama - Action Film directed by Cecil B. DeMille and produced by Cecil B. DeMille and Sidney Biddell.
SYNOPSIS
DeMille added his characteristic taste for the spectacular to the true story of an Arkansas doctor (Cooper) who risks his life to evacuate wounded American sailors from Java. First a missionary doctor, then a navy medic, Cooper disregards orders and takes badly wounded men aboard a train and fights his way to one of the last ships to breach the Japanese blockade. The film was DeMille's war benefit, with the real doctor's fee and the profits going to the Naval Relief Fund. Novelist Hilton, who adapted the story for the screen, also turned the story into a book.
