Rio Bravo Overview:

Rio Bravo (1959) was a Western - Romance Film directed by Howard Hawks and produced by Howard Hawks.

SYNOPSIS

Reportedly director Hawks and star Wayne were so put off by High Noon (1952) and the Cooper character's requests for help from the townspeople that they filmed this rough-and- tumble Western in rebuttal. It is, in any case, a terrific story, and features themes and characters that Hawks use again in El Dorado (1967) and Rio Lobo (1970). No-nonsense Texas bordertown sheriff Wayne arrests the bullying cattle baron (Akins) who dominates the town for murder, though he knows Akins's men will come after their boss. Wayne gets little help from Martin, his deputy, who's become a hopeless drunk, and Brennan, an old man who's little more than a mascot. When wagon-train boss Bond shows up with a gunslinging Nelson in tow, Wayne first resists Nelson's help. But when Akins's men shoot Bond, Nelson joins the fray. Martin straightens up, Nelson proves his mettle, and the Duke and Brennan flush out the bad guys with an explosive climactic gunfight. Wayne even gets the girl, saloon singer Dickinson.
