After the death of her father she was raised in a Dublin orphanage. She later apprenticed as an upholsterer, which was her father's profession.

She gave birth to a daughter who lived only 1 hour, a victim of the 1917 influenza epidemic that raged through Melbourne. Her husband became a victim as well, shortly after.
