Both of his marriages, first to actress Rosemary Forsyth and then to Carol Hume, produced daughters and ended in divorce.
Co-founder of the American Place Theater and the Apple Core Theater, an inter-racial repertory company, both in New York City.

He is survived by his partner, Donna Peck of Copiague, New York; three daughters, Alexandra Tolan, Jenny Tolan and Emily Tolan; a brother, Gerald Tuchow and his sister-in-law Marilyn Tuchow of Bloomfield, Hills, Michigan.
