The Atlantis crew were in fact picked up by the German supply ship Python but after that too was sank, they made their way back to Germany courtesy of Italian and German submarines using a small flotilla of rubber boats. On return, they received a heroes' welcome from the head of the German Navy.
The ship, Abdullah, that caused so much consternation to the Atlantis is the fictional name for the British ship, Kemmendine.
