A four-minute fragment from the end of the first reel of this film was found at Dalian, China, and is now kept at Theatre Museum, Waseda University, Japan. This fragment was screened at the 22nd Pordenone Silent Film Festival in 2003.
Josef von Sternberg insisted on casting Esther Ralston, over studio objections that she was not up a major dramatic role in which she ages by several decades.

The script underwent many rewrites; among other things, the title character changed from a tough-talking prostitute to a naive peasant.
