Adapted from a Broadway musical starring Marilyn Miller and presented by Florenz Ziegfeld Jr.. The original production opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre in New York on Dec 21, 1920 and ran for 561 performances. Leon Errol was in the opening night cast, and Billie Dove was a replacement cast member during the show's long run.
Fragments of the color film for the "Wild Rose" song and dance number were found in the 1990s and have been intercut into the print that Turner Classic Movies shows on its cable channel.

In September 1928, Warner Bros. Pictures purchased a majority interestin First National Pictures and from that point on, all "First National" productions were actually made under Warner Bros. control, even though the two companies continued to retain separate identities until the mid-1930's, after which time "A Warner Bros.-First National Picture" was often used.
Originally presented in 100% 2-color Technicolor, today the complete film survives only in black and white, with a singular musical number, "Wild Rose," in color.

James as Pops, The only songs in the musical used in the film were the title song, "Sally," "Wild Rose" and "Look for the Silver Lining."
