Often named as the first film to use the word "fuck" in its dialogue (see quotes). Another contender is Ulysses released the same year.
The BBFC originally requested the complete removal of Josie's single use of 'fucking' for the film's cinema release. A compromise was reached between the censors and 'Michael Winner' and instead the word was partly obscured by the sound of a car horn.
The film was denied a MPAA seal of approval due to a scene between Oliver Reed and Carol White that implied oral sex. Universal distributed the film through a subsidiary that was not a signatory to the MPAA. Along with a similar scene in Charlie Bubbles, this helped to bring about the end of the Production Code and its replacement with a ratings system.
