In 1931 he saved the Embassy Theatre from being converted into a cinema and then produced over a hundred plays there. He then let the Embassy Theatre to visiting companies in order to concentrate on the Phoenix Theatre with the aim of establishing a stock company, thereby allowing a cheaper admission price which would appeal to a wider audience of playgoers.
