Appeared in two classic 1950s television productions of "The Philco-Goodyear Television Playhouse: Marty (#5.23)" (1953) and 12 Angry Men (1957).

Father of Julie Philips (actress, producer).

Sober, good-looking dramatic actor, first on 1950s Broadway ("Middle of the Night"), film (played Dr. Michael Rossi in Lana Turner's version of Peyton Place (1957)) and TV ("Perry Mason" (1957), "The Further Adventures of Ellery Queen" (1958)) who switched gears midstream to directing classic 1960s and '70s TV episodes ("The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961), "M*A*S*H" (1972)).

Studied at Adelphi College in New York and with Harold Clurman.
