Harvard University graduate. Began in the motion picture industry in 1934. After World War II, joined Selznick, then with 20th Century Fox and, later, as independent producer. Produced five major classics: 'Broken Arrow' (1950), 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (1951), 'Cowboy' and 'Bell,Book and Candle' (both 1958), and 'Khartoum' (1966). Member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (from 1946) and trustee for the Motion Picture and Television Fund.
