Graduated from the New York University's School of Journalism, but opted for a career as actor/director on Broadway. He started on Broadway producing and acting in shows for the Army during World War II. He was not only in the film of 'Guys And Dolls', but also directed and starred in the national touring company as Nathan Detroit opposite Betty Grable. He was also known for 'A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum' (as replacement for Zero Mostel), later joining the national touring company as director and star.
