Graduated from Dartmouth College in 1930 and initially pursued a career in advertising. Joined RKO as story editor in 1940. Served in the U.S. Navy during World War II making documentary films. Formed own production company by agreement with Howard Hughes in 1948, turning out low-budget features. Best known as the creator of the TV series "Ironside" (1967) starring Raymond Burr.
