The Shadow of the Tower (1972) s01e11 – The Strange Shapes of Reality
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
Oh, no, Richard Warwick is back. And now we’re getting the story of his time just imprisoned, because the king (James Maxwell) pities him so won’t just execute him. Executing him means taking him seriously as a threat to the crown and Warwick can’t be seen as a threat. And so on and so forth. read more
The Shadow of the Tower (1972) s01e10 – The Man Who Never Was
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
I was unprepared for The Man Who Never Was, even acknowledging the anthology nature of the show, which has had great successes, could also have great failures. And the episode is most definitely a failure. But because of casting. It’s a strange episode in general—lots of flashbacks, lots of seventi read more
The Shadow of the Tower (1972) s01e12 – The Fledgling
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
I really had no idea how far “Shadow” could drop, did I? I mean, The Fledgling manages to be the worst episode of the series (with only one left) and with Richard Warwick in it but nowhere near the worst part. Though, to be fair, Warwick is in a much reduced role compared to the last two episodes. read more
The Shadow of the Tower (1972) s01e13 – The King Without a Face
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
This episode is a direct continuation of the last, but from James Maxwell’s king’s perspective. At least at the start, tragedies quickly start changing it up and Queen Norma West ends up with the most to do… then the episode brings Maxwell in and gives them a joint focus, then it shifts to Maxwell read more
The Flash (2014) s06e04 – There Will Be Blood
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
It’s a big sad episode, with all the men going through their pre-Crisis sads about Barry (Grant Gustin) dying in just six weeks. Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is sad so he steals the super-cure they’re supposed to be stealing to save villain Sendhil Ramamurthy, who is stunningly bad at the acting thing. read more
Evil (2019) s01e04 – Rose390
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
The show goes a little overboard with the scary tech angle. Even more than last time. This time it’s pedophiles hacking AR games and grooming kids when they’re playing on their headsets. The kids in question are lead Katja Herbers’, as it’s not clear the problem child at the center of the episode read more
Evil (2019) s01e05 – October 31
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
There’s something up with the racial optics on “Evil.” The all-Black Catholic parishioners is a thing. The show kind of dares you to notice it, but it’s a thing. Black Catholics are not a familiar TV trope; I can’t think of one besides Frank Pembleton and they made a big deal out of the Catholic read more
Batwoman (2019) s01e02 – The Rabbit Hole
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
It’s a much better episode. While it’s not great, it’s at least enjoyable this time. The direction’s a lot better than the pilot; there’s not a lot of Batwoman action, but there’s a lot of action. Including civilian Nicole Kang having to defend herself from a bad guy because the show’s read more
Batwoman (2019) s01e03 – Down Down Down
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
Ruby Rose flirts with a bartender played by Brianne Howey from “The Passage,” which basically makes the episode. It's in the middle of Rose investigating Tommy Elliot (Gabriel Mann in a part he really ought to appreciate more), billionaire pal to Bruce Wayne who seems to know about Bruce’s read more
Batwoman (2019) s01e04 – Who Are You?
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
I didn’t pay enough attention during the opening so I didn’t realize Rachel Matthews’s Magpie was going to have the stupid neon wig. Magpie’s the villain from John Byrne’s Batman and Superman team-up issue of Man of Steel. “Batwoman” could score some major points if Magpie was awesome. read more
Supergirl (2015) s05e01 – Event Horizon
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
Not much has happened since we last saw our heroes; Kara (Melissa Benoist) still hasn’t told Lena (Katie McGrath) about being Supergirl, even though she really, really wants to tell her, she really does… meanwhile Lena has created a talking AI to bitch at about how much she hates Kara for never read more
Supergirl (2015) s05e02 – Stranger Beside Me
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
This episode ought to be called “The One With All the Whining.” First, there’s still Lena (Katie McGrath) whining—entirely to her super-Echo—about how Kara never told her the Supergirl thing. McGrath’s new plan is to pretend everything’s cool and exploit Supergirl’s friendship. Of course read more
Planetes, Volume 01 (2003)
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
The first volume of Planetes has five different stories. They’re vignettes. I’ve read this volume before, I remembered the vignettes. Even if the first story doesn’t feel much like a vignette. The story opens with a spaceship disaster. Actually it opens with a cute married couple and then the read more
Supergirl (2015) s05e03 – Blurred Lines
The Stop Button Posted by on Oct 30, 2019
Carl Lumbly shows up in this episode and you almost remember when you liked the stuff with J’onn (David Harewood). Barely. Lumbly’s voice brings back that warm feeling, so long missing on the show. And he’s got to be there because this episode’s all about Harewood finding out why he doesn’t read more
Biloxi Blues (1988, Mike Nichols)
The Stop Button Posted by Andrew Wickliffe on Oct 29, 2019
Biloxi Blues has some rather peculiar, rather significant third act problems. Like, it doesn’t have a third act. Did they cut a bunch to keep the PG rating or something? Because at a certain point the rising action stalls out and the film goes into montage summary overdrive. After giving lead Matth read more

Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure (1959, John Guillermin)
The Stop Button Posted by Andrew Wickliffe on Oct 27, 2019
Tarzan’s Greatest Adventure is a fairly solid action thriller. Tarzan (genial, musclebound Gordon Scott) is hunting nemesis Anthony Quayle through the jungle. The movie opens with Quayle and his crew robbing an African settlement. They’re after the dynamite but they end up killing a couple people. read more
