Basil Rathbone as Scrooge I’ve finally discovered how to post a poll on my blog, so there is now one in my sidebar asking for people to vote for their favourite film/TV version of A Christmas Carol. Please do cast your vote and also leave a comment if you would like to. Following on from the read more
A Christmas Carol (J Searle Dawley, 1910)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Dec 3, 2012
A Christmas Carol has probably been filmed, staged and adapted more than just about any other literary work. As my ‘Dickens in December’ season carries on, I’d be very interested to hear which adaptations of this great tale are other people’s favourites – my own, out of read more
The Pickwick Papers (Noel Langley, 1952)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Dec 2, 2012
My Dickens in December season is getting properly under way with this review – come back tomorrow for another posting! Compressing an enormous, rambling book like Dickens’ Pickwick Papers into a single film of under two hours sounds like a daunting task. But director and screenwriter Noe read more
Dickens in December
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Dec 1, 2012
As a lifelong Dickens obsessive, I’ve been vaguely intending all year to do a series of postings on films based on his books for his bicentenary, but have only got round to a couple of postings, on the 1935 films of David Copperfield and The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Now it’s December and, read more
Royal Wedding (Stanley Donen, 1951)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Nov 23, 2012
Don’t be misled by the title – though MGM probably hoped people would be. There is nothing very glitzy about this movie, not all that much pageantry, and the only “king” featured is Fred Astaire in a pasteboard crown for the opening musical number. For the most part, the royal wedding, of Princess read more
Angel (Ernst Lubitsch, 1937)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Nov 5, 2012
This bitter-sweet romantic comedy flopped at the box office on release, and is still largely overlooked. It led to Marlene Dietrich being labelled ‘box-office poison’ and dropped by Paramount, before going on to reinvent herself in Destry Rides Again. It also contributed to director Ern read more
My Fair Lady (George Cukor, 1964)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Oct 18, 2012
Audrey Hepburn My Fair Lady has one of the greatest scores of any musical, by Lerner and Loewe, with many songs which have become standards, such as With a Little Bit of Luck, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly and On the Street Where You Live. It is also one of the most gorgeous musicals to look at, making ful read more
The Wedding Night (King Vidor, 1935)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Oct 6, 2012
Gary Cooper and Anna Sten I’ve been meaning to write something about this little-known but powerful melodrama directed by King Vidor, which was made under the Hays Code, but feels like a pre-Code in its sympathetic portrayal of an adulterous passion. Unfortunately I’ve left it a little t read more
The Desperate Hours (William Wyler, 1955)

David Copperfield (George Cukor, 1935)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Aug 17, 2012
This is a continuation of my mini-Dickens series and also a rather rushed contribution to the TCM Summer Under the Stars blogathon - Saturday, August 18 is Freddie Bartholomew’s day on TCM in the US (though not, sadly, in the UK, where I live), and David Copperfield is being shown as part of h read more

The Ring (Alfred Hitchcock, 1927) – and the BFI’s Hitchcock retrospective
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Jul 20, 2012
Lilian Hall Davis and Carl Brisson It’s great that so many classic movies are now available for home viewing – but nothing compares with seeing them as they were made to be shown, on the big screen. So far I’ve only managed to see a relatively small number of older films in this wa read more

I just wanted to mention that I’ve been asked to take part in a couple of blogathons on classic movie themes which are coming up soon, and am looking forward to both of them. First off, KC at Classic Movies is organising the Mary Pickford Blogathon on June 1, 2 and 3 – I will be writing read more
Warner Baxter
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on May 13, 2012
As well as writing about films on this blog, I’ve been meaning to write a few postings about the actors and actresses I especially like. While some of the top stars of the 1930s, like Gary Cooper and Cary Grant, are still (and deservedly so) household names, others, who were equally popular read more

Claude Rains and Zeffie Tilbury I’ve been planning to review a few Dickens films to mark his bicentenary, and am now beginning at the end of his career – though I do plan to write about adaptations of some of the earlier novels too! I will be discussing the whole plot of Drood in this re read more
Men with Wings (William A Wellman, 1938)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Apr 1, 2012
I’m going to take a break from posting about Wellman after this one and turn to other directors for a while… but first just wanted to say something about his movie focusing on aviation pioneers, Men with Wings, which stars Fred MacMurray, Ray Milland and Louise Campbell. Sadly this is read more
Roxie Hart (William A Wellman, 1942)
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Mar 11, 2012
This will just be a fairly quick posting, as I don’t seem to have much time at the moment, but want to keep my blog alive! One reason I have picked William A Wellman to write about so much is that I tend to find his films are enjoyable to watch time and again. This is certainly true of Roxie H read more
Living statue Charlie Chaplin tribute
Movie Classics Posted by Judy on Feb 16, 2012
On a trip to Norwich yesterday, I was delighted to see a human statue paying tribute to Charlie Chaplin. When I put some money in the hat he gave me a little bow! On returning home I had a look on Youtube and discovered that someone had put up two videos of him, so am linking to these for others to read more
