The Shining (1980) (1)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 19, 2012
What can be written about The Shining at this point? Really, it’s a masterpiece directed by the legendary Stanley Kubrick that tells a horror story both in the mind and outside it. A haunted house film filled with psychological trauma. So I guess you don’t have to read my review… read more
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 18, 2012
Today’s film is the first of two films that were recommended to me during my call for horror film submissions. Thanks to Nick Jobe, blogger at the fantastically named Random Ramblings of a Demented Doorknob for recommending today’s film. I’d actually been told by several people read more
The Omen (1976)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 16, 2012
Still a day behind and this was the film I’d originally scheduled for a few days ago before the schedule went all over the place. The Omen does get us back on track with my killer kids theme and really, does anyone do it better than Damien? Damien (Harvey Stephens) came to personify the evil read more
Fido (2006)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 15, 2012
Fido is a fun little comedy that slipped under the radar when it came out back in 2006. I loved it when I finally saw it on DVD but haven’t seen it again in a few years and figured it was worth rewatching and reviewing. If you’re a fan of quirky zombie comedies à la Shaun of the Dead read more
The House of the Devil (2009)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 14, 2012
Going newer with today’s film and I will say that opinions for this film is an alienating one. People generally love it or hate it. I love The House of the Devil but I know it’s filled with flaws and director Ti West has not done anything other than this that I’ve enjoyed. read more
The Bad Seed (1956) (1)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 13, 2012
I first saw The Bad Seed in my high school film class and it was love at first sight. Sure it’s got campy written all over it with heavy-handed acting and characters breaking into monologue but the acting and plot keep everything from going off the rails. The film is remarkably deep, choosin read more
The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) (1)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 13, 2012
The film starts off by presenting a truncated version of Kenneth Grahame‘s The Wind in the Willows by following the manic whims of Mr. Toad (voiced by Eric Blore). Toad gets “motor mania” and in read more
Creature From the Black Lagoon (1954)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 11, 2012
Before we get to today’s review I am running a day behind (this review should have gone up yesterday) so I’ll be catching up over the weekend. Sorry about that but hey, it took over a week for me to fall behind so that’s a record in my book. Today’s film is the classic Unive read more
The Brood (1979)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 9, 2012
I started including a David Cronenberg-directed film into my Halloween watching last year and overall it’s been less than a good decision. I chalk it up to the films I’m picking because Cronenberg in the late 70s-early 80s isn’t working for me. I mean I love David read more
Suspiria (1977)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 8, 2012
I always feel bad not enjoying a movie that’s generally loved, or at least admired for something; such is the case with Dario Argento‘s Suspiria. I’ve seen Suspiria twice, the first time being about three Halloweens ago and I rewatched it today because I didn’ read more
Village of the Damned (1995)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 7, 2012
I started out my 31 Days of Halloween by reposting my review of the 1960 classic Village of the Damned and was resigned to see this remake as a point of comparison. I’ve heard incredibly divisive reviews of this 1995 remake ranging from indulgently praising it (“It’s better than read more
I Walked With a Zombie (1943) (2)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 6, 2012
I had no idea I’d be doing two Jacques Tourneur/Val Lewton productions so close together but oh well, they’re worth comparing. I saw I Walked With a Zombie before I saw Cat People and on first viewing I loved it, especially considering it’s take on Jane Eyre. Recen read more
Alice Sweet Alice (1976) (2)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 5, 2012
**While this is a repost of my original review I had edited it for the 31 Days of Halloween and included the Fright Meter at the bottom!** I’ve had Alice Sweet Alice for over three months and I was sick of looking at the red Netflix envelope. Alice Sweet Alice is a weird horror film that trie read more
Cat People (1942) (1)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 4, 2012
I really need to stop scheduling in advance, things never go right! I know I mentioned moving I Walked with a Zombie to today but I always forget that TCM’s “day” runs from 6am-6am so when I read that the film would air the 3rd at 1:30 I failed to take into account that it read more
Blithe Spirit (1945) (1)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 3, 2012
I misjudged dates when I originally planned my 31 Days of Horror and thus I ended up scheduling I Walked With a Zombie before it airs on TCM so with some re-configuring you get Blithe Spirit today, and I Walked With a Zombie tomorrow (sorry about that). Anyway, today’s film is read more
Black Sabbath (1963)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 2, 2012
Day two of the 31 Days of Halloween and the first original review of the holiday (I do recommend reading Village of the Damned again even if you read it the first time I posted as I’ll be reviewing the remake in a week or so). With all subsequent reviews I’ve decided to come up read more
Village of the Damned (1960) (2)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Oct 1, 2012
I’m a fan of “creepy kid” films, i.e. movies where children are possessed, murderous, aliens, what have you! Oddly enough, the British seem to have a hold of this genre as they’ve made some crazy forays into it. Just recently I saw the Deborah Kerr film The Innocents which read more
The Sex Symbol (1974)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Sep 30, 2012
The final installment of Golden Age on the Silver Screen till November, and I really wish I had picked a better movie for this mid-season finale. The Sex Symbol is a “thinly veiled” biopic of Marilyn which is just a fancy way of saying the film changed characters’ read more
Bambi (1942)
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Sep 30, 2012
I shouldn’t say this is the final Journeys in the Disney Vault till November as you’ll be getting The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad early in October. Let’s say then this is the last one, in order, till November. As a kid I didn’t read more
The TCM Top Twelve for October
Journeys in Classic Film Posted by Kristen on Sep 27, 2012
W TCM in October is just behind Summer Under the Stars as my favorite time of year because of all the Halloween films they do! Classic horror is the theme this year and there’s so many excellent horror films I wanted to include but considering I’m doing my own 31 Days of Halloween I read more
