Stocky, mustachioed American actor with dark wavy hair who alternated as hero and villain of low-budget action films and serials, then moved into character roles as bankers, crooks, wardens, doctors, and officers. He found a permanent home on television with the role of the grouchy Doc Adams in Gunsmoke, a role in which the quizzical Stone features were seen from 1955 to 1972. Died from a heart attack.
