Mary Brough was probably the first great character actress of British sound films. This fierce, chunky little woman brought her haranguing approach from the stage to the screen, most notably in her last few years, as a formidable adversary for the Aldwych farceurs. You felt that anyone hit by Mary Brough's umbrella would stay hit. Brown-haired and pugnacious, she was a stage actress for more than 50 years. She died from a heart ailment at age 71.
