MINI BIO:

Blonde American actress who brought warmth, vitality, and emotional appeal to French films of the early sixties after a shaky start in her own country in Saint Joan. Later films never trained her abilities along the right lines and, although she continued to look better in French films than those of Hollywood, her film career had ground to a halt some years before she committed suicide with barbiturates. Married to writer-director Romain Gary from 1963 to 1970. He shot himself in 1980.

Kim Novak wanted to play the role eventually given to Seberg in the film musical Paint Your Wagon (1969). Actresses considered for Seberg's role in Lilith (1964) included Natalie Wood, Yvette Mimieux, Samantha Eggar, Sarah Miles and Diane Cilento.

She was a close friend of Nico, and David Keller.

Her second marriage to the 24-years-older Russian novelist Romain Gary was tempestuous and profoundly unhappy due to his obsessive, Svengali-like influence on her. Divorced in 1970 when she became pregnant by her lover Carlos Navarra, she committed suicide in 1979 while he took his own life by gunshot the very next year; however, Gary stated in his suicide note that Jean's suicide had nothing to do with his.
