MINI BIO:

Distinguished British actor, adept at fussy or incisive characters, who was for many years president of the British actors' association Equity. At first often seen as minor, mean-minded officials, his characters increased in benevolence in later years, when he was to be spotted as bishops, academics, judges and ministers of the crown. He only had one leading role of importance in the British cinema, in Mr. Emmanuel, but produced a typically fine performance for the occasion. He was also amusing in a semi-lead in The Ghosts of Berkeley Square. Knighted in 1965.
