MINI BIO:
This stern-faced native American actor was a full-blooded Cherokee Indian, the oldest of nine children. Going through spells as a miner, boxer, ranchhand, and rodeo performer, he ended up in Hollywood as a stuntman in westerns, also doing extra work and bit parts. His first high-profile success came in his late forties when he portrayed Tonto in a couple of Lone Ranger serials. After that he played the title role in Geronimo, and even showed a talent for comedy as a bumbling Sitting Bull in Buffalo Bill. He retired from films in 1952, and died from cancer three years later.
