MINI BIO:
German actor with pale, round eyes and unruly curly hair. He came to Hollywood in the 1920s as assistant to the director FW Murnau, but soon became a comedy character relief in dozens of (especially light) films, typically as an easily flustered Viennese shopkeeper or official who minced words in more scenes than one. He found work extremely hard to get in wartime, and shot himself at 57.
