TCM Celebrates Olivia de Havilland's Centennial in July!
In honor of her 100th birthday on July 1st, TCM celebrates the venerable, lovely and talented Olivia de Havilland as Star of the Month. With her soulful gaze and sincere acting style, de Havilland has been an audience favorite since her days as Errol Flynn's leading lady in such films as Captain Blood (1935) and The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). Born in Tokyo to English parents, de Havilland gained screen immortality with her luminous performance as Melanie in Gone with the Wind (1939). She won her first Best Actress Oscar for To Each His Own (1946), in which she plays a woman who bears a child out of wedlock and must give him up - only to be reunited with him as a grown man. A second Oscar came for her portrayal of he lovelorn spinster in The Heiress (1949). Among her many other outstanding performances are those in The Snake Pit (1948) and Light in the Piazza (1962).
The celebration kicks off on de Havilland's birthday, July 1st, at 8pm EST with airings of Raffles, followed by Gone with the Wind, and into the early morning of July 2nd with The Adventures of Robin Hood, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Captain Blood and Anthony Adverse. The promotion continues each Friday in July with an array of de Havilland's work including The Heiress, Dodge City, The Strawberry Blonde -- and much more.
