Teens coming of age in "The Breakfast Club," the inspiration of "The Lion King," the fowl terror of "The Birds" and the female drama of "Thelma & Louise" will be preserved for perpetuity as the titles were added this week to the prestigious Library of Congress National Film Registry that has a local connection.

Various selections from the now 700-title list will be screened for free in January in the art deco style theater at the Library of Congress Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper.

Newly seated Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden Wednesday named her selection of 25 films chosen for the 2016 Registry because of their cultural, historic or aesthetic importance. Many of the titles have already been preserved by the copyright holder, the filmmaker or in archives, but those that have not will be protected for future generations on the Packard Campus.
