Jane Fonda was checking into the Brown Hotel in Denver with Robert Redford last year when she felt a shock of déjà vu so strong that it knocked her back 50 years.
"I said, 'Bob, does this remind you of anything?' the Oscar-winning actress recently told Vanity Fair by phone, describing a scene that the longtime friends filmed for Netflix's romantic drama Our Souls at Night, out Friday.
"He didn't know what I was talking about. But we checked into the Plaza Hotel as newlyweds in Barefoot in the Park. And here we are checking into a hotel again to make love for the first time. In each movie, it was the first time that [our characters] were going to be together sexually. And I just thought that was a real kick in the ass."
The movie marks the fourth screen collaboration for Fonda and Redford-following 1966's The Chase; 1967's Barefoot in the Park; and 1979's The Electric Horseman. Adapted from Kent Haruf's novel, Our Souls at Night centers on Addie, a lonely widow (Fonda) who summons the courage to approach a widower (Redford) in her small town to suggest that they begin sleeping together-for the company, not the sex. Soon enough, as Addie and Louis (Redford) bond, romantic feelings develop.
