In The Farmer's Daughter, Katrin Holstrom (Loretta Young) reads the story of the townsfolk who place their beloved doctor's office shingle as a monument on his tomb: "Dr. Sorensen: Upstairs". Essentially the same scene occurs in Dreaming Out Loud where Lum and Abner place the "Dr. Walter Barnes: Office Upstairs" shingle on the good doctor's tomb.

The screen rights were initially bought by David O. Selznick. He intended to make it a vehicle for Ingrid Bergman. She declined the role, however. He tried to cast either Dorothy McGuire or Sonja Henie, but eventually sold the rights to RKO Radio Pictures.
