It’s a classic story, and of course Audrey Hepburn steals the show. She is a treasure. The music is also wonderful!
It’s a classic because it’s still preformed today, the music and Audrey Hepburn!
Entering so that I can take my lovely wife to see it!!
My Fair Lady is a classic to me because it is relatable to American English. Even nowadays. There is so much slang terminology floating about that is makes it difficult to remember what is correct grammar. It’s also very relatable to the struggles of lower income people when dealing with proper education.

Thee are so many reasons this movie is a classic. the music, the story, the characters. Audrey Hepburn and Rex Harrison are incredible performers. Even though it started with Professor Higgins taking on the challenge to educate Eliza with an arrogant and overbearing confidence, the affection they developed shone through.
The Pygmalion story set to the incomparable music of Lerner and Lowe is what makes it a classic. The storyline of the play/film is used in many mediums, often for comic effect. For example, I was watching the Andy Griffith show today, and it was the episode “My Fair Ernest T. Bass” where Andy teaches the unruly hillbilly Ernest T. Bass to be a gentleman. After Andy helps to transform Ernest T. Into a presentable member of society, Barney says something to the effect of, “you know if you wrote this into a play, nobody would believe it!”
The songs are timeless, it seems Rex Harrison was born to play Higgins on Broadway and the silver screen, and Audrey Hepburn really was an excellent actress mastering the Cockney accent as Eliza.
I watched it on TCM about a month ago, and couldn’t tear myself away although I’ve seen it before. It would be grand to see it on the big screen with an audience.
Also, I tried to enter the phrase verbatim on my twitter it account, and it won’t let me send it as it says I’m 60 characters over. I’ll try to rewrite what you have (& honor the intent) so I can tweet it.
Thanks for letting me know… I found your tweet… thanks so much for entering and Good Luck 🙂
Oh, I just LOVE this movie! The songs are excellent, the radiant Audrey Hepburn, such a fun story! Just saw it on broadway and loved seeing it come to life. I love seeing these classic films in the theater. So fun!

What is it about “My Fair Lady” that makes it a classic — even today, 55 years after its release?
I would say it’s the songs by Lerner and Lowe plus Harrison and Hepburn’s performances!
My Fair Lady is a classic tail of work ethic, class, and opposites attracting. The beauty of the set and costume designs are exquisite art in their own rights.

MY FAIR LADY’s claim to classic status reaches back to the Greek myth of Pygmalion, which inspired G. B. Shaw’s own story of Eliza Doolittle and Henry Higgins. When Shaw’s story was brought to the musical stage and then the silver screen, as MY FAIR LADY, the gorgeousness of lush romanticism, in music and visual art, was added to Shaw’s satiric wit and sharp critique of the English class system, and the ending was altered to accommodate our culture’s taste for love stories. Although the basic story is classic in whatever form it is told, I think that MY FAIR LADY is a classic for modern audiences because of these alterations. It takes us to an imagined other world of joyous color, beauty, wit, and triumph. It does not ask us to examine our own world. So it works gloriously as respite from our daily troubles. It never fails to delight and refresh the jaundiced eye.
Thanks so much for entering Gloria… Good Luck 🙂
The fact that Audrey Hepburn was cast as Eliza Doolittle made it the smashing success that it was. I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.

I have never seen it, but would love the chance to see the movie that beat Mary Poppins (One of my all-time favorites) at the Oscars that year on the big screen.
My Fair Lady is such a classic film. Everything about this movie is fabulous — the music, the story, the acting.
Hi, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account or if it’s private. Thanks so much!
Have not seen it, but I do love Audrey Hepburn, and this is a film I have been dying to see for years! What better opportunity than on the big screen?
The story is timeless and the music is terrific. My favorite “On The Street Where You Live.” Visually, the film is a treat to the eyes; it’s just beautiful to behold.
The answer is Audrey, pure and simple!
Timeless songs – Audrey Hepburn – timeless beauty
There are several factors that make “My Fair Lady” a classic 55 after it’s initial release.
1. It is based on George Bernard Shaw’s play, “Pygmalion”
2. Beautiful costumes by Cecil Beaton
3. Impeccable set design by Mr. Beaton and Gene Allen
4. Spirited choreography by Hermes Pan
5. A legendary score by the team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe
6. A first rate cast led by Audrey Hepburn as “Eliza” and Rex Harrison who got the opportunity to reprise the role of “Henry Higgins” that he originated on the Broadway stage, with great support form Wilfrid Hyde-White, Isobel Elsom, Mona Washbourne, Theodore Bikel, Jeremy Brett and Stanley Holloway who reprises his role of “Alfred Dolittle” which he originated on the Broadway stage almost steals the film with his jubilant rendition of “Get Me To The Church on Time” .
7. Breathtaking cinematography by Harry Stradling, Jr.
8. Expert direction by the legendary George Cukor.
I think it’s one of the best examples of a Musical where the songs carry the story. And of course, the songs are just awesome. That and nobody can quite talk his way through a song like Rex Harrison.
I LOVE musicals! I’m a huge Julie Andrews fan and listen to the OBC all the time. It’s great to be able to watch My Fair Lady and get a gist of what it would have been like on stage with Julie. Audrey Hepburn is absolutely amazing in this role. My favorite scene is when she starts shouting in her cockney accent at the race.

My Fair Lady is a classic because the classy style of Audrey Hepburn. Plus Rex is outstanding in his role. The story never gets old and I love rewatching this classic over and over again.
Everything about My Fair Lady is classic: songs, script, performances, costumes, sets . . . the sheer sumptuousness and beauty of it all. It has both wit and heart. And in a deliciously subversive twist, given the surface circumstances, it’s ultimately the story of a woman’s strength and a man’s vulnerability.
What makes MY FAIR LADY A CLASSIC FILM?
AUDREY! AUDREY! AUDREY! Her charm & demeanor is a real life fair lady…on & off screen. It’s a fairy tale ending very like a “Cinderella” story. Audrey makes a grand metamorphosis into a beautiful butterfly.
And those spectacular Cecil Beaton costumes! Not to be missed on the big screen.
I have never seen the movie in its entirety, on the big screen or the small screen. But I am familiar with the story and the music. That’s what makes it a classic: People know the story and the music even if they haven’t seen it!
