About The Film: The first Western epic! A great caravan of covered wagons, filled with hearty pioneers and their families and possessions, are waiting for the Spring “jump off” at Westport Landing, now Kansas City. The time is 1848, and the destination is far-off Oregon, in The Covered Wagon (1923), the first big-budget Western epic. Where countless pilgrims fell, a love triangle flourishes, as Molly Wingate (Lois Wilson) must choose between the brutish Sam (Alan Hale) and the dashing Will (J. Warren Kerrigan). Complicating her decision are the perils of the trail: a mile-wide river, prairie fire, heavy snowfall, a buffalo stampede, crippling hunger, and Native American attacks. Boasting a cast of thousands and an unparalleled commitment to authenticity, The Covered Wagon was an enormous box-office success in 1923 and became one of the major milestones in the history of the Western.

The Covered Wagon is a film that I’ve heard about for years, but have never had an opportunity to watch. Now that it is available on home video, I’d love to finally have the chance to see it by winning a copy!
Looks like a great film and excited to hear the Gaylord Carter score

I recently took an online course in the History of Movie Westerns and I would love to add this seminal film to my viewing history. I’m particularly interested in its treatment of Native Americans, hoping for (but not expecting) fewer stereotypes than in most of the classics I studied for the course. That said, I’m also a sucker for stalwart women torn between hunky lovers.
Sounds like a very interesting course! I’m looking forward to seeing this one myself. Thanks for entering and Good Luck 🙂
I’d like to win because I have not seen this and it looks cool.
I would love to win The Covered Wagon as I’ve heard of it but never seen it.
I also LOVE both Alan Hale Sr. And Warner Oland I’m so many films!
I’d love to win this DVD because I teach film studies and am woefully limited in my knowledge of silent film and Westerns. I need all the exposure I can get, and this looks fabulous!
Hi Elyce, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Please confirm that you tweeted or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!
I would like to win The Covered Wagon for the simple reason that I’ve never seen it. The Western is one of my favorite film genres, so I would love to see this early entry in the genre.
I love Westerns. I love the shared American myth, for all its flaws. The genre has gone in and out of fashion over the years, but it is the one that has always somehow managed to tell us who we were, and still are. The resonance of the image of a rider on horseback, somewhere out in the Wild, has never really faded.
I haven’t seen this movie, but it’s nice to win obscure classic movies, so I’ll bite.
My Mom loved Westerns. We would watch them together on weekends when I was a kid. She passed away last Saturday. I don’t know what I’m going to do without her.
Oh I am so very sorry to hear about your loss. Please accept my sincerest condolences. I hope that your Mom’s love of film will carry on through you and that, over time, they will bring you fond memories.

Heard that name before. Looks like he co-directed Stroehim’s “The Great Gabbo”. Seems like an interesting picture.
posting on behalf of Nathan: I would love to win a copy of “The Covered Wagon” because for years I have been compiling a list of all AFI list nominees and have been working my way through them. After watching almost 1,000 movies, I’ve got about 500 more to go and this is one of the films!
All I have ever seen of the THE COVERED WAGON is the old truncated Kodascope version. I would love to win this restoration so that I can enjoy the entire movie, finally!

Thanks so much for entering Stuart, and Good Luck 🙂
I would love to win this DVD because I love westerns & silent movies.
Hi Cathy, please confirm that you tweeted or let me know here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!
As a former student of film in college, I am interested in this wonderful representation of a classic Hollywood western. American all the way! Good luck to all.
Hi Frank, please confirm that you tweeted or let me know here if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!
A timeless classic that i would love to watch for years to come
I am interested to see a silent western with Alan Hale
I have never seen this classic and would love to have the opportunity to watch this with my 9th grader who is learning digital film making in year long elective at school
Im in love with the poster art, it makes me wanna check it out.
Hi Bill, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please just confirm that you tweeted. Thanks!
I would like to win this movie because I feel very limited in my exposure to silent films and I love westerns! I have never heard of this film so I think it would be exciting to possibly begin a journey into the world of silent westerns with this movie.
I would love to win this DVD. I grew up on Westerns and this being a silent film sparks my curiosity. I enjoy Alan Hale too!
I would like to win this because I have very few western films in my collection
I am just now starting a classic movie collection. I have now been a devout fan of classic movies for over 2 years and would love to add to my slowly growing collection with “The Covered Wagon”.
I have been watching more silent movies recently and this is one that I have wanted to see! I like Lois Wilson and have wanted to watch more of her movies.
Hi Emily, I can’t seem to find your tweet. Could you please confirm that you tweeted, or let me know if you don’t have a twitter account. Thanks!
The Western is the genre that introduced me to a love of classic film, and this is one I’ve always heard about. I’ve even written a book (which you’ve given away) on the genre. To get a copy for my collection would be not merely super, but a treat.
