About the Author and Book: James Bacon was the ultimate insider of Hollywood’s Golden Era as a syndicated columnist for 41 years, first with the Associated Press and then with the Los Angeles Herald-Examiner. He sipped champagne with Sophia Loren, drank vodka with Joan Crawford and got a first-hand account of Marilyn Monroe’s affair with JFK. During his lifetime, Bacon compiled his memorable celebrity encounters in two books, “Hollywood is a Four-Letter Town,” (1976) and “Made in Hollywood” (1977), which the New York Times called “frank, spicy and entertaining.” He also wrote an acclaimed biography of Jackie Gleason, “How Sweet it Is” (1985) which was celebrated by notables like Paul Newman, Frank Sinatra and Laurence Olivier. His widow, Doris Bacon, has decided to reissue the books, long unavailable on Amazon, in Bacon’s spirit. They are entertaining reads, crammed with stories and inside scoop on Hollywood’s biggest names, from Monroe to Elizabeth Taylor to John Wayne to Bette Davis and more.

–Annmarie Gatti for Classic Movie Hub
Ingrid Bergman, because she was the most beautiful woman to ever walk on this planet.
I do not have a Twitter account, so I am posting here to enter but cannot tweet the message.
I would love to hang out with Lucille Ball because I adore her, but I would also like to hang out with Judy Garland because in addition to hopefully listening to her sing, I would also try to help her. I’d let her know that these studio execs were controlling and killing her, and she was so much more than they made her think she was. She would be fine without them. This would probably be before she got hooked on pills, so maybe I could stop that too? Wishful thinking. This turned out more depressing than I intended, but it would be nice to hang out with both of those women.
If I could have hung out with anyone it would have been Jim bacon. He interviewed and met everyone in the business, All the Hollywood elite. I remember reading his column in the paper and occasionally seeing him on TV and thought he had the most exciting life meeting all these wonderful stars. Hanging with Frank Sinatra and the rest of the rat pack would put me in Heaven And Jim bacon certainly hung out with all of them. That’s why I hope I win this book.
I’d love to hang out with Billy Haines, Cary Grant, and Joan Crawford. Imagine the gossip!
Would definitely want to spend time and hang out with Rita Hayworth. She loved to dance and so do I and she had stories to tell that would have been intriguing.

In my fantasy I would like to dance with Fred Astaire. Also in my fantasy I would like to actually be able to dance, rather than have my actual “two left feet”.
This is very difficult. My first thoughts were Humphrey Bogart (probably with a Bacall bonus, too), Barbara Stanwyck, Cary Grant, or Jimmy Stewart. But I think I’d leave actors and choose Alfred Hitchcock. Not only could we talk about his films and many, many stars, but we could discuss filmmaking in general. That would be a fascinating conversation.
That is a very hard question to answer as there are so many and for different reasons. Top of my list would be Maureen O’Hara, Spencer Tracy, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck, The whole Rat Pack, Kathryn Hepburn, Debbie Reynolds, Robert Mitchum, Lucille Ball, Henry Fonda, Thelma Ritter, Walter Brennen, Doris Day and Cary Grant. It would be fabulous to get a glimpse of their off screen personalities!
Probably hanging at Romanoff’s with Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, and Gene Kelly over a Wonderful Pasta and Fish dinner, great glass of wine. Great Cappuccino, or coffee and a great dessert. Shooting the breeze, talking about films , what I liked about them. They’d be picking my brain on what I thought of scripts they got. I’d dance with each of them. Frank would be serenading me.
I want to hang out with Katharine Hepburn because she’s the most talented beautiful ballsy actor in the history of Hollywood.
There are many fun stars I can think of: Cary Grant, he was multi talented…. Frank Sinatra-I love music and dancing… Katherine Hepburn & Spencer Tracy-great before their time in “Guess who’s coming to dinner”….. Sydney Poitier, Sammy Davis, Jr.
any of the great musical singers & dancers-Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers, Dick Van Dyke, Julie Andrews

Gene Kelly and fred astaire, because they are the greatest tap dancers of their time, and I would like them to teach me how to tap dance.

Judy Garland and Mickey Roonie. I SOOOO love that era, and those kids!!!
Whew! The possibilities…
Tony Curtis: mainly to verify my father’s claims to have grown up with him in the same neighborhood in NYC, and always referred to him as a stuck-up show-off.. not far off the mark, perhaps, but just how did that manifest itself?
Which leads to Marilyn Monroe, just for the possibility of seeing her in one of those Watch me become *her* moments, which are so storied.
Those are the ones that occur to me today, at least.
I think it would be interesting to hang out with Sammy Davis, Jr during the movies with the Rat Pack
Carol Lombard would be my BFF. She was tough as nails, funny as hell, charming as could be, stunningly beautiful, and a true American. One of my favorite stories is about all the crazy Hollywood parties she had where she showed up at her own party in an ambulance.
Can you imagine hanging out with someone who was once married to both William Powell and Clark Gable? Can you imagine hanging out with someone who had an affair with Russ Colombo? Someone who starred in silent movies and then went on to starring in talking pictures opposite the likes of Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart?
What I wouldn’t give for one evening out on the town with the legendary Lombard!
I would have loved to hang around with Dean Martin and the wide array of people he worked with!
It would have put me around the terrific Martin & Lewis nightclub act and the subsequent movies…the unreal sets of Rio Bravo, Some came running, The Young Lions, Oceans 11, Robin & The 7 Hoods, Kiss me stupid, The Matt Helm films-I could go on all day!
Laid back, smart and cool!!!
I am a married man or I’d have said Carole Lombard or Hedy Lamarr…In my opinion the two most amazing women in classic Hollywood history.
I have so many favorites!!
I’m going to have to go with Doris Day. I would have loved to hangout with her on the set of her movies with Rock Hudson and Tony Randall since those three movies are tops for me. I’d have many lunches with the trio and just pick their brains. Then, I’d go with Doris Day to her movie trailer for some girl talk and I’d ask to try on her clothes. I’d be lucky to go home with a fashionable souvenir of hers to make my time worthwhile. Of course I wouldn’t leave without getting autographs of the three. I’d frame those babies on my wall and admire them. They’d make for a good story to tell my friends and family too.

There are so many stars to choose from. I’d probably have to say Katharine Hepburn. Her vigor for life experiences would be insanely fun to be around. She was so intelligent and active, and her stories would be fantastic. Plus, I wouldn’t have minded being a third wheel on her dates with Spencer Tracy.
I would love to spend time with Katharine Hepburn, because she could teach me how to be independent and my own individual. She was fearless, strong, and marched to the beat to her own drum.
I’d love to hang out with my favorite classic movie actress, Ginger Rogers! She seemed like a lot of fun, had a very positive “can-do” attitude & maybe she could teach me a few dance steps!
Such a difficult choice, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, Cary Grant, And Lucille Ball are my favorites actors. But hanging with Louis B. Mayer or any classic Director would give me the option to meet all MGM actors and see Hollywood as it once was. Ah if only .
Bogart, Jimmy Stewart and the great James Cagney. Just my all time heroes.
Of course Ava Gardner…..beautiful and classy yet unpredictable….just ask Howard Hughes! 118 pounds soaking wet yet able to assert her independence. Spunky and a little stinker. If not with a marble ashtray, she can control men with her eyes. She would be a wildcard on a date…A legend and an example of the nostalgia that we golden age lovers seek.
There is no question, I would love to have spent time with Walt Disney. An innovator with unlimited imagination and always seeking the next creative challenge. Yes, Frank Capra, Stan Laurel, and Buster Keaton are excellent choices, as well, for their personal contributions to the history of motion pictures… but the influence of Walt Disney, to this day, is still felt throughout the world.
The star I would’ve liked to hang out with would’ve been Irene Dunne because she was so sweet and gentle. She was an amazing actress and singer that was RKO’s Queen of the Lot. I would’ve loved to have asked her about her experiences filming Cimarron (1931), Back Street (1932), Ann Vickers (1933), Roberta(1935) and of the different working styles at RKO, Universal, MGM, and Columbia and what she thought of them.
I would love to hang out with Jimmy Stewart, he was a genuinely kind person and a War hero from WWII.
I think I would like to have hung out with Deanna Durbin, Virginia Weidler, Roy Rogers.
Bing Crosby, his knack for being humorous effortlessly just blows my mind. My favorite movie he starred in was alongside Ingrid Bergman “The Bells of St. Mary’s” had so many educational & humorous takes, I loved it!
I had to think hard on this question because there are so many I admired but Audrey Hepburn was captivating in her impeccable role, “Breakfast at Tiffany’s.” It’s one of my all time favorite flicks. Audrey Hepburn played Gigi on Broadway but I don’t believe she played the same role on the screen. That went to Leslie Caron.
I would Love to Hang Out with Danny Kaye, Judy Garland, Jack Benny, Paulette Goddard, Frank Sinatra, Ginger Rogers, Gene Kelly, Hedy Lamarr, Errol Flynn, Mae West
* Each one of these Glorious People are Multi-Talented and I feel Not only could I learn so much from spending time with them, but I feel their personalities shine through their ‘Hollywood’ persona to get to know their True Authentic Selves.
I live in Chicago & I’m Lucky enough to have worked at Booth One (formally The Pump Room) and dined at their famous Booth One. I am Obsessed with OTR & Golden Era Films!!
To Round Out My Top 10
